Avid Labs Lighting 2019-2020

 Avid Labs Industrial Design.

Engineering and Industrial Design, July 2019 ———— June 2020

Custom omnidirectional light loop ——————————————— Designed for undisclosed client creating planes in the airline industry.

My Role: I performed all the design and engineering work, in addition to overseeing manufacturing. Details: Diffused Acrylic rod (straight and heat bent) with milled channel for tape light. Connectors/Hangers are 4 pieces CNC machined from aluminum, then mirror polished. Hung from 1/16in SS cable with black oxide finish. Power is divided into two halves lengthwise to manage voltage drop with each half running to separate PSUs (Power Supply Unit). Specs: Natural White 4000K, 750lm/m, 24v

Underwater Marine Light ——————————————— Design/Engineering/Optics/Project Management

Details: Original light was a flat lens with 700lm. Our client wanted a more powerful version in the same footprint with a target price that is half of the competition. We developed a new board with higher spec leds, as well as optics to project the light farther and wider. Specs: 5000K, 1700lm, 12v, 18ga marine grade leads, UL94-V2

Schoolhouse Light ——————————————— I performed all the design and engineering work, in addition to overseeing manufacturing.

Details: Designed around an off-the-shelf fixture to eliminate the need/cost of UL Certification. Killark explosion proof light, and plastic globe with 4in fitter mounted to a custom flange. The decorative flange is turned then milled from C360 Series Brass. The client wanted the finish to be antique brass. Due to the short time frame I determined that brass would be the ideal choice. Brass has excellent corrosion resistance, and can also be quickly tarnished with chemicals like ammonia or vinegar. Brass will also be ideal for maintenance because it can be cleaned and re-tarnished, always yielding a real antique brass look. Specs: Input 277v, 20W, 2700k, 2300lm, Bulb Type A21

Personal Light ——————————————— 3D Printed end caps used in production version.

AVERE® 4UV Barndoor ——————————————— Initially developed as a special project for a large installation.

We opted for 3d printing as any modification of the fixture housing would require UL Re-certification + Fees. THe barndoor attaches to the fixture and secures without the use of fasteners by using a slide lock. 3D Printed in carbon fiber nylon on a Markforged printer. Doors are laser cut SS with matte black powder coat.

State Capitol Led Retrofit ——————————————— Custom application of Avid Lab’s Avere 3cob fixture to replace incandescent bulbs.

This change will greatly reduce maintenance costs, as scaffolding is the only way to reach the fixtures. I sandblasted a glass lens we had lying around, and the prototype was successful in creating even diffusion.

Concept for Undisclosed Project ——————————————— Design

Rail Light Engineering Change ——————————————— RAIL Light Thermal Management and End-cap Redesign.

Originally designed as a self supporting lighting system for automotive paint inspection. High CRI, 42V. Thermal paste degraded over time. Replaced with aluminum shim. Temps reduced by 15°C verified after sever hours of testing, and monitored with Fluke thermal camera. Possible moisture build up. Polycarbonate end cap replaced with 3d printed variant equipped with gore vent. Possible cracking of polycarbonate end cap caused by flat countersunk screws forcing the material apart if over tightened. New 3d printed end cap designed for use with non-countersink screws.

Dishwasher Sales Demo ——————————————— Sales demo designed for client.

I utilized the cad model to create renderings of different views and cutaways for the graphics team to work their magic.

N95 Mask ——————————————— Designed and engineered a suitable replacement for an N94 mask targeted at the construction industry.

Made using available in-house production processes. laser cutting, machining, die-cutting, ultrasonic bonding, and riviting.
